Tackling Thyroid Disorder

Do you think hormones are controlling your life?

A lot of today’s illness are due to this hormonal disturbance. Like thyroid, PCOS , Diabetes etc. All these hormones are regulated by endocrine system of your body. And thyroid gland is part of endocrine system.

Thyroid gland is butter fly shaped endocrine gland situated in lower part of neck, in front of voice box. The main function of the gland is making thyroid hormone which are secreted in blood and carried to every tissue in the body. Two types of hormones are produced T4 (thyroxine) and T3 (tryiodothyronine)

Thyroid hormone helps the body to use energy, stay warm and keep the brain, heart, muscles and other organs working as they should. They control the way every tissue in body use its energy. It controls your heart rate, blood pressure, body temperature, the metabolism, ie the rate at which food is turned into energy.

Thyroid functions are controlled by pituitary gland in brain. It secretes Thyroid stimulating hormone, i.e. our famous TSH to stimulate thyroid gland to produce thyroid hormone.

Thyroid disorder can be caused by disturbance at functioning at any level.

Malfunctioning of the thyroid gland can be caused by chronic stress, mismanaged lifestyle, autoimmune diseases and many more.

It is more commonly see in females, older as well as young girls. Its less prevalent in males but I have many patients with thyroid these days. children are not spared by this ailment too. In my practice I have seen many child cases with hypothyroidism.

In our practice of more than 10 years, in last few years thyroid disorder has become major part of disease.

Following are the common types of

  1. Hypothyroidism
  2. Hyperthyroidism

I will focus on Hypothyroidism, since it is more common.

Hypothyroidism means you have an under active thyroid. In people with hypothyroidism, thyroid gland doesn’t make enough thyroid hormone to keep the body running normally.

  1. Sense of tiredness and weakness
  2. Fatigue
  3. weight gain
  4. Constipation
  5. Hair fall
  6. Swelling on the face and other parts of the body
  7. Excessive sleepiness
  8. Low mood
  9. Raised blood cholesterol level
  10. Raised blood pressure
  11. Reduced or impaired memory
  12. Intolerance to cold

Complications of hypothyroidism:

Goiter – the gland enlarges due hypothyroidism and shows up as a significant swelling along the midline of the neck

Cretinism – lack of thyroid hormone in children leads to delayed milestones, stunted growth and poor brain development

Infertility – due to impairment in ovulation

Enlargement of heart and heart failure

How to identify at right time?

Any deep disturbance in the system of the body will always reflect in body and mind both. We need to identify or be more cautious towards the signs that body and mind manifest on the surface.

In modern science the treatment of the thyroid complaint is symptomatic which include replacing the thyroid hormone in case of under active thyroid or suppressing the thyroid gland to not to produce excess amount of thyroid hormone. For severe cases as per the cause surgery can also be advised.

And the thyroid little pill clings to you for rest of your life. This is very narrow way of looking at the ailment. Especially when, thyroid gland which gets influenced by chronic stress and lifestyle changes, it needs more holistic way to look at it.

Homeopathy being holistic science has the best scope in these complaints. Homeopathy believes body and mind function as one unit. An individual is comprised of the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual components operating as a ‘whole unit’ in harmony. So he expresses as whole unit in its own way during sickness too. Holistic health is essentially an approach to life which considers the whole person and how we interact with our environment during sickness.

In my practice I have seen say 100 cases of hypothyroidism then all these 100 patients differ in their unique way, in how they perceive the sickness. Some will perceive it as acute emergency as if its a life and death situation. Some are not bothered at all, their family members are more worried. Some are very anxious and fears that it may lead to cancer. And mind you their physical complaints also will have unique pattern in it. So, homeopathic treatment for every ailment is very individualistic.

The holistic approach means to integrate different therapies that support the body’s natural healing system. At healing Harmony our approach to thyroid cases is not limited to only treatment but based on the concept of holism ie power of 5, So Healing goes beyond just eliminating symptoms but also involves guidance towards the modification of lifestyle, which includes correct eating habits and regular exercises, mind relaxation to experience a balanced, harmonious and a healthy state.

This power of 5 concept of holism tries not just treat the symptoms at physical level but heal the deeper disturbance which has caused the complaint and bring back the harmony. Homeopathy works on PNEI Axis (pshyco-neuro-endocrine immunology) which activates or stimulates your thyroid gland and in turn the endocrine system to work in balance. So this individual and holistic treatment will give long lasting results. In fact in the long term homeopathy can also help improve immunity. Since homeopathy works on improving the immunity, it can also help in treatment of autoimmune hypothyroidism.

In practice we have seen many patients have got benefited from this. Treating from TSH more than 150 to normal level of TSH has been the wonderful and easy journey to our patients.

We have seen cure process with tapering of the thyroid pill and eventually putting off the thyroid pill from their life and still continue to do good and definitely seen a change in their perception towards the ailment.

Let me give you one example:

Male patient, 34 years of hypothyroidism, with TSH more than 90, he came up with muscle cramps, nerve pain as main complaint. With the history he was fitness oriented, workaholic, very concerned for his performance. And after the complete history we prescribed Lac Equinum as a remedy. And he did wonderfully well.
